MPO seekers submit memo to JS Speaker
Agitators meet education minister today

The agitating teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions submitted a memorandum to the Speaker of parliament yesterday. Meanwhile, a meeting is scheduled to be held between the agitators and Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid at his residence in the capital at 3:00pm today, said a handout yesterday. A five-member delegation led by Esharat Ali, president of Non-MPO Shikkha Pratishthan Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote, went to the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around 1:00pm to submit their memorandum to Speaker Abdul Hamid. Contacted, over cellphone, Esharat told The Daily Star that they submitted memorandum to the Speaker around 4:00pm. "He [the Speaker ] listened to our demands during an hour-long meeting and told us that he will inform the education minister about our demands," he said. Earlier in the morning, several hundred teachers assembled at Suhrawardi Uddyan to stage a hunger strike to press home their demand. A huge contingent of law enforcers were seen deployed in and around the Uddyan. Under the banner of the jote, the teachers and employees have been agitating since January 7 to press home their demand to include their institutions in the monthly payment order (MPO) list. According to the jote leaders, over 100,000 teachers and employees of around 7,000 non-government secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical educational institutions have been deprived of MPO facilities for long.
