Padma bridge surely in this govt tenure
Says Obaidul Quader
The Padma bridge's construction will surely begin during the present government's term even if World Bank denies to fund it, said Communications Minister Obaidul Quader while laying a bridge's foundations in Sylhet yesterday.
The Awami League-led government will prove that they believe in work by constructing the bridge with its own fund. The opposition's claim that the bridge will not be constructed during the present government's term is just propaganda, he said.
The bridge, situated in Govindaganj area and costing Tk 23.82 crore, is one of the 14 bridges being built on the Sylhet-Sunamganj Highway under Eastern Bangladesh Bridge Improvement Project.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) is funding the Tk 200-crore project.
He later visited an under-construction bridge over the Surma river at Mallikpur area of Sunamganj district.
Roads and Highways Department (RHD) failed to construct the 402 metre bridge in six years for, as it states, fund constraints. The project cost was raised to Tk 64.55 crore from Tk 23.7 crore.
Assuring to provide necessary funds, Obaidul asked officials concerned to complete the construction as soon as possible since the prime minister was scheduled to inaugurate the bridge in October.
