Give AL another chance to serve
Hasina urges people
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the people to reelect the Awami League (AL) in the next national election so that it could make Bangladesh a middle-income country by 2021, the golden anniversary of independence.
“BNP's coming to power means resorting to terrorism, lootings, criminal activities and money laundering,†she said, formally starting her party's election campaign for the next parliamentary election.
Hasina said BNP was sided with Razakar, Al-Badar and war criminals and gave them the national flag, which was earned at the cost of blood of the countrymen.
The AL president thanked the people for electing her party in 2008.
“I urge you to cast your votes for "boat" [AL election symbol] in all the seats in the next general election to give the AL another chance to serve the country,†she told a grand rally at Khulna Circuit House.
Tens of thousands of party leaders, workers and supporters attending the rally raised hands in support responding to the call.
Hasina also sought votes for AL leader and incumbent Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque in the August election to Khulna City Corporation.
The premier said the country generated 6,500MW of electricity, while people got electric poles, not electricity, during the past BNP government, as Khaleda's sons used to do business of electric poles.
Referring to the first war crimes verdict against Bachchu Razakar, Hasina said her government had kept its promise by trying the war criminals.
The AL chief said Khulna was a den of terror during the BNP-Jamaat rule when prominent journalists like Humayun Kabir Balu, Manik Saha, Harun-ur-Rashid and AL leader Manzurul Imam were killed. But this government has eliminated criminal activities, she said.
Earlier, the premier reopened Daulatpur Jute Mill, which had been closed 10 years, and inaugurated a number of buildings and structures in Khulna.
