Man gets death for killing wife over dowry
A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a man to death for strangling his wife to death for failing to meet his dowry demands in his Pahartali residence in Chittagong city on September 7, 2004.
Judge Sharif Mostafa Karim of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 also fined the man, Mukhesh Singha, Tk 1 lakh, and gave him 60 days to file an appeal with the High Court against his conviction.
The court also acquitted three other accused -- the convict's younger brother Rakesh Singha, sister Sima Das and brother-in-law Chayan Das -- as allegations against them were not proven.
The four were present when the judge passed the order around 1:00pm.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Bhabatosh Nath of the tribunal told The Daily Star that Mukhesh killed his wife Asru Chowdhury and tried to make it look like a suicide.
On the day of the murder, Asru's father Swandip Chowdhury filed a murder case with Pahartali Police Station accusing the four.
Mukhesh gave his confessional statement in a court two days after the incident and police submitted the charge-sheet against him on November 5, 2004.
The court took into cognizance all the four as accused and later framed the charge. After recording the deposition of 11 prosecution witnesses, the court pronounced the sentence, said the PP.
