BCL men attack journos at RU
A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Rajshahi University (RU) unit attempted to shoot journalists while its activists assaulted journalists who were covering news of BCL's vandalism at the physics department of RU yesterday.
The assaulted journalists were photojournalist Azhar Ali and RU correspondent Sujon Najeer of the daily Sokaler Khobor, photojournalist Selim Jahangir of the daily Janakantha, RU Correspondent MA Sayeed Shuvo of The Daily Star, and RU correspondent Nazim Mridha of New Age.
Witnesses said about 40 BCL men, led by RU unit BCL Deputy Library Affairs Secretary Nasim Ahmed Setu and its Organising Secretary Touhid-al-Tuhin, vandalised four teacher's chambers at a science building of RU physics department around noon.
Later, when Azhar and Selim were taking photos of the vandalism, Setu took out a pistol from his pocket and attempted to shoot them, said witnesses.
When other journalists came forward to help the photojournalists, BCL activists assaulted them, they said.
BCL men also compelled Azhar to delete photos from his camera.
BCL activists did the vandalism as Setu, also a first year student of RU physics department, who was shown as failed in the first year final examination, witnesses added.
Contacted, RU Physics Department Chairman Mushfikur Rahman said Setu could not achieve the minimum required point of 2.50 out of 4.00 in the first year final examination, so he could not be passed and upgraded to the second year as per the university regulations.
This being the third consecutive time Setu failed the first year finals, he would be dropped from RU as per the university rules.
RU unit BCL President Ahmed Ali apologized to the journalists for the incident and requested them to not publish any report about it.
