Inu urges all to resist Jamaat, Shibir

Staff Correspondent
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu yesterday called upon all, including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, to politically boycott Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat-backed Islami Chhatra Shibir to secure democracy in Bangladesh. “If we fail to resist Jamaat and other extremists and militant organisations now, they will convert Bangladesh into a country like Pakistan, Afghanistan or Iraq through bloodshed and killings,” he told reporters at his secretariat office. Inu, also Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president, said Jamaat has always been a fundamental and militant organisation which the party has proved time and again in independent Bangladesh. The information minister said they are examining the constitution and Election Commission (EC) and other existing laws to take action against Jamaat and Shibir for their recent militant attacks on the state and the administration. However, he did not make it clear whether the move is aimed at banning Jamaat-Shibir politics or cancelling its registration as a political party. “Jamaat will have to face the consequence of unleashing the armed attacks against the state and the administration,” he said.
