Well-off people should help health sector
Says health secretary
Well-off people of the society should contribute to the health sector as the government alone cannot provide healthcare to all people of the country, said Senior Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Humayun Kabir yesterday.
He was speaking as chief guest in the inaugural ceremony of a maternity ward in BGMEA Hospital, Chittagong. The programme was organised by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in the port city.
Laying stress on the antenatal care, Humayun said although the maternal mortality rate in Bangladesh has reduced by 40 percent, still a large number of women die every year while giving birth.
If the women can be provided with proper healthcare during the antenatal period, the number of maternal death will be possible to reduce to a great extent, he added.
He also said the government has given special importance on workers' healthcare in the national budget.
Humayun thanked the BGMEA to establish the maternity ward in their hospital for providing healthcare to the garment workers during their prenatal and postnatal period.
Professor Dr Selim Muhammad Jahangir, principal of Chittagong Medical College, emphasised that the public-private partnership in health sector is required to spread healthcare to the rural and poor people.
He urged the BGMEA to take initiatives to provide all people with modern healthcare facilities.
BGMEA First Vice-President Nasir Uddin Chowdhury who presided over the meeting said inaugurating the maternity ward is a part of the initiatives that BGMEA took for the welfare of the garment workers.
