Rapid Action Battalion arrested Rajshahi city unit Ameer (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami Ataur Rahman and seized 20 handmade bombs from his possession in the capital yesterday. Protesting the arrest, Jamaat called a dawn to dusk hartal in Rajshahi division today. Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan, director of intelligence wing of Rab, said they arrested Ataur on his arrival in the capital's Kalyanpur from Rajshahi by a bus around 5:15pm. The Jamaat leader was also carrying 12 books on jihad written by different leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, he claimed. They originally went there to arrest him for his alleged involvement in Monday's attack on a local Awami League (AL) office in Rajshahi city, he added. On Monday night, activists of Jamaat-Shibir attacked the AL office at Binodpur, leaving at least five AL men injured. Our Rajshahi correspondent reports, Ataur Rahman is accused of some 22 cases of murder, violence, arms and explosives related incidents with different stations of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said a RMP official.
