Shahbagh on Amar Ekushey


1) Recitations from the holy Quran being made at the start of yesterday's grand rally at Shahbagh in the capital around 4:00pm. It was followed by reading of texts from the Bible, Bhagavad Gita and Tripitaka. 2) A portrait of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam, mother of a martyred freedom fighter and the first to initiate the movement for trial of war criminals, looks over the demonstrators at Shahbagh. 3) The first flag of independent Bangladesh adorns the street with flower petals inscribing the words “we want war criminals to be hanged” on it. 4) Females made up a large portion of the demonstrators as shown in this picture of women freedom fighters singing patriotic songs at the venue. 5) Some of the many pious Muslims who regularly take part in the Shahbagh demonstration with black ribbons pinned to their clothes. 6) Imran H Sarker, convener of the Bloggers and Online Activists Network, winds up the nonstop 17-day demonstrations at Shahbagh and reads out the programmes to be observed till March 7.
