AL men stage demo at RU demanding jobs

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
Some 40 local Awami League leaders and activists staged a sit-in on Rajshahi University campus yesterday, demanding jobs for pro-AL candidates in the university. They kept the university's Kajla gate shut and did not let any university transport in or out through it during the six-hour demonstration, causing immense suffering to students. The AL men alleged that the RU vice chancellor, Prof M Abdus Sobhan, whose term expired on Monday, had appointed people involved with BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in the university in exchange for money during his four years in office. The AL demonstrators who came from ward-28 of Rajshahi city demanded that at least 20 pro-AL people from the ward be given jobs in the university soon. Prof Sobhan denied the allegation of bribery in the recruitment process and said some quarters were trying to pollute his image at the end of his term. Proctor Chowdhury M Zakaria said police were deployed on the campus and situation was normal now. The demonstration ended around 2:00pm.
