Empowerment of women stressedSpeakers at a workshop titled “Reproductive health, HIV/Aides and gender issue” in the port city on Tuesday said the empowerment of women is a key to address problems relating to reproductive health and gender issues and check the rise of HIV/AIDS diseases. “The women in Bangladesh are mostly neglected and stayed backward because of disparity between men and women in the society. This inequality often leads women fall victims of violence in an alarming number,” they said at the workshop at the auditorium of Ansar & VDP Hospital. Ansar & VDP, Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Range organised the workshop for its members in association with home ministry. Brigadier General AKM Fariduzzaman, director of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), was present as the chief guest in the workshop with Sheikh Abdul Mannan, range commander of Ansar & VDP, in the chair. Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling Mills (BSRM) Ltd donated four computers to Centre for Disable Concern (CDC), a voluntary organisation in the port city working for the development of the persons with disability, as grant at a function at its office on Sunday. Director of BSRM Group Zohair Taher Ali, General Manager Tapan Sen Gupta and Manager (HR and Administration) Osman Gani Majumder handed over the computers to CDC Executive Director Selim Nazrul. A doa mahfil for Nazir Ahmad, a veteran journalist and former president of Chittagong Metropolitan Journalists Cooperative Society Ltd, was held at Shahi Jame Mosque at Anderkilla on Saturday. Nazir died on July 18 after prolonged illness. Khatib Allama Syed Anwar Hossain Tahir Jabiri Al Madani conducted the mahfil and spoke briefly paying rich tribute to Nazir. He said Nazir was all through a honest and good person. Enlightened and dignified persons are grown up in an enlightened society where such people are respected and honoured, said the speakers at a memorial meeting and reception to the GPA 5 achievers at Raozan upazila in the district on Friday. Raozan Nagorik Committee organised the meeting in memory of Yusuf Chowdhury, founding chairman of local daily the Purbokone, and Prof Abdul Khaled, former editor of local daily the Azadi, at Raozan-Rangunia Nizam Uddin Public Hall. Recalling the memories of Yusuf Chowdhury and Abdul Khaled, residents of Raozan, the speakers called upon the local people to restore the lost glory of the upazila through working from respective fields. Rules for ship-breaking industry demanded
Workers engaged in highly risky jobs of ship-breaking at a press conference demanded formulation of rules to ensure safety and rights at ship breaking yards. Bangladesh Occupational Safety and Environment Foundation along with six associated workers' organisations enlisted with the foundation's FND project. FND Project Coordinator Jalal Ahmed in a written statement said the ship-breaking industry is providing steel and re-rolling mills with around 80 percent raw materials and thus playing an important role in the economic development of the country. He said around 30,000 workers are involved in this industry. But, in absence of proper rules they are forced to work in the ship-breaking yards risking lives, he added. The speakers at the conference demanded proper application of Labour Act 2006 at ship-breaking industries and other such workplaces and formation of committee with the representatives from both the owners and the workers to ensure workers' health and safety. They demanded appointment letters and Identity Card (ID) for the workers and put up several recommendations. Md Shafar Ali, Rizwanur Rahman Khan, Dilip Kumar Nath, Mafizur Rahman and Chowdhury Md Ali also spoke at the press conference.
