'Local body elections were fair'
Speakers at a workshop said the recent local government elections were held in a free and fair manner but the people were deprived of the honest and the efficient representatives. They said this at a workshop on 'Parliament and Citizen Certificate on Parliament Members' at a local hotel on Saturday. Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Sachetan Nagarik Committee jointly organised the workshop. Nagarik Committee Chittagong unit convenor writer Begum Mushtari Shafi presided over the workshop. Representatives from different professions like teachers, doctors, journalists, political activists and students took part in the discussion. They discussed on different topics like efficiency of candidates, their wealth, responsibilities and their presence at parliament session. Speakers said late journalist Muhammad Idris always worked for the welfare and development of grassroots level people and with the non-government organisations that focused on pro-people activities. They were addressing a citizens' meeting to condole the death of Idris at the Engineer Abdul Khalek auditorium of Chittagong Press Club (CPC) on Saturday. They said late Idris was an activist for achieving the rights of the suppressed people of the society. He always fought for democracy, human rights, women's rights, child rights and environment, they said. Speakers at a seminar urged the Chittagong University (CU) authorities to take measures to reduce session jam and help the students complete their study in time. They were addressing a seminar on 'Academic Institution for Education' organised by the Chittagong University Journalists' Association at the auditorium of Dr Md Yunus Building on Sunday. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr M Badiul Alam said none should support politics that creates anarchy in the educational institutions and spoil the atmosphere of education as the institutions are the heart of a nation. Chittagong Divisional Business Review Meeting and Chittagong City Branch Managers Conference-2008 of Sonali Bank were held at Chamber House on Friday. The bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director SA Chowdhury was the chief guest in the programme chaired by Chittagong General Manager Mushtaq Ahmed. Speakers here on Thursday emphasised the need for planting trees in all fellow lands to save the environment and living beings on the earth. They were addressing the inaugural ceremony of a tree distribution programme on the Baralia Government Primary School premises under Patiya upazila. Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashraf Shamim was the chief guest at the function with the Chittagong District Primary Education Officer Dr Mohammad Nurul Amin Chowdhury in the chair. They urged the students to be sincere enough from the very beginning of their student life about the tree plantation. Speakers at a seminar underscored the need for increasing strength through efficiency in the information and technology sectors to compete the world. “The expenditure of the information-technology sector can be reduced by using the local technologies,” they said. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department of the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) organised the seminar on “Information Technology” at the department on Thursday. The department also arranged a farewell reception for the third batch and reception for the seventh batch of the department. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shyamal Kanti Biswas inaugurated the programmes as the chief guest where Cuet Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Dean Prof Dr Paritosh Kumar Sadhu Khan and Engineering Faculty Dean Prof Dr Saiful Islam were present as the special guests. Six technical papers on the information and technology were presented by teachers and experts of different universities and organisations at the seminar.
