The holy month of Ramadan is here. This month is devoted to fasting and observed by the Muslims throughout the world as one of the “five pillars” of Islam. Fasting, however, is not mere abstinence from food and drink during certain hours every day. The prohibition also extends to other activities. The emphasis on gratitude to Allah serves to remind us of the duty of charity towards the less fortunate, another pillar of Islam (Zakat). So, it is a moral duty of the rich to extend their helping hand towards the have-nots that Allah has made obligatory for the former. The Ramadan is a great opportunity for them to stand by the less fortunate. Let us uphold the spirit of Ramadan.
