Diabetes Awareness Day observedSpeakers at a discussion in the port city on Thursday emphasised on raising awareness to prevent diabetes among the children. Chittagong Diabetic Society organised the discussion at Bahodderhat marking the Diabetes Awareness Day 2009. Founding President of Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Well Group Chairman Abdus Salam as the chief guest inaugurated the programme by releasing balloons in the morning. General Factory Manager of Unilever Bangladesh Limited Ruhul Khan was the special guest. Speakers expressed concerned over the spread of the disease among the adolescents. Prof Jahangir Chowdhury made the address of welcome while Society Joint Secretary Morshedul Alam Quadery and Mohammad Shahabuddin addressed among others. A free dental check up booth was opened at the 17th Chittagong International Trade Fair (CITF) on Saturday with a view to providing dental treatment for the visitors at the fair free of cost. President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) and Awami League (AL) lawmaker MA Latif inaugurated the booth set by Oral Health Education and Research Centre. Family Dentist, a modern dental clinic of Chittagong, is proving treatment support at the booth. Latif in his speech urged the physicians to play their role not only for providing health services but also for considering the social responsibility. General Secretary of AL South District unit Moslem Uddin Ahmad, Dr AQJM Sirajul Islam, Engineer Md Abul Kashem, Ward Councillor Gias Uddin, Dr Mizanur Rahman, Dr Koushik Das, Dr Umme Salma Munmun were present at the function. Foundation President Dr Mostak Hasan Sattar thanked CCCI for allotting a stall for them at free of cost to run the dental check up. 'Punish culprits of BDR carnage'
Speakers at a condolence meeting said the massacre at the BDR Headquarters last month aimed to destroy the spirit of liberation war and Bengali nationalism as well as the sovereignty of the country and to halt the trial of the war criminal. They urged the government to punish the culprits after proper investigation. They were addressing a mourning rally in front of Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday organised by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation. Federation Presidium Member M Saiful Alam Chowdhury presided over the rally. Cultural personalities Pradwip Dewanjee, Sanjib Barua, Dipak Chowdhury, Jahangir Kabir, Najim Uddin Shyamal, Sheikh Showkat Iqbal, Anchal Chowdhury, Alok Mahmud, Swapan Mazumder, Sucharit Chowdhury Tinku, Ramij Uddin and Md Ali Titu spoke among others. Speakers at a rally urged the government and the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to prevent road accidents. They were addressing a workers' rally at Bahodderhat intersection on Friday with a view to building awareness among the transport workers. Executive President of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation and lawmaker Shahjahan Khan was the chief guest at the rally with its President Zeabul Hoq in the chair. Deputy Commission (North) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Banaj Kumar Mazumder and DC (Port and Traffic) Md Sakhawat Hossain were the special guests at the rally. Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Shafiqul Islam was the main speaker at the rally. Bangladesh Road Transport Workers' Federation (East) President Mrinal Chowdhury briefed about the organisation and placed some suggestions to prevent road accidents. Speakers urged the traffic department and BRTC to stop providing route permit to the unfit vehicles and to maintain strict monitoring while providing driving licence. Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) of Premier University organised its monthly literary seminar at the conference room of the Academic Building-1 on the campus on Thursday. Two keynote papers were presented at the seminar moderated by DELL Assistant Professor Rumana Chowdhury. Assistant Professor Manjurul Alam of Chittagong University (CU) while presenting a keynote paper titled 'Wrong number telephone encounter: A study of a Bangladeshi speech community' narrated the similarity between Bengali culture and public manner in a telephonic conversion with unknown persons. DELL Assistant Professor Shahnaj Parvin presented a paper titled 'Motivation and English language teaching learning procedures in Bangladesh.' CU English Department Prof Kazi Mostain Billah, Chowdhury Mohammad Ali, Assistant Professor Sarwar Morshed, and DELL Assistant Professor Gazi Shahdat Hossain spoke at the seminar.
