Road accidents
Road accidents are taking a huge toll and I think it is one of the major causes of deaths in our country. Every day we hear about terrible road accidents in which many people lose their lives and become maimed.
I was dismayed by reading the report published in The Daily Star on March 23, 2009 which revealed that 61% driving licenses are obtained without test. TIB study on BRTA disclosed that license could be obtained for Tk 100 - 7000 and for passing the test one has to pay Tk 100-500, that is without appearing in a test. One can get fitness certificates for a vehicle without checking it, in exchange of a small amount of money.
How disgraceful!
It is quite clear why so many accidents are taking place, unskilled drivers are at the wheels and all the vehicles are not roadworthy. Sometimes the driver's attitude play a role, the tendency to overtake contributes to accidents.
I urge the government to look into the matter and take necessary steps to prevent accidents as far as possible.
