Pickup with tiles worth Tk 12 lakh 'hijacked' in Savar

A pick-up van loaded with tiles worth Tk 12 lakh was allegedly hijacked by unidentified miscreants in Savar early today.

Samsul Islam, the owner of the vehicle, claimed that the incident happened on the road opposite the Savar Highway police station. He said the miscreants tied up the driver of the vehicle and drove away leaving him beside a road.

He said he couldn't file a complaint with the Ashulia Police Station.

"They will record the complaint after reviewing CCTV footage of the place," he added.

Pickup driver Shahidul claimed that he loaded tiles in the pickup around 10:00pm last night from the Gabtoli area. Later, he left for Rangpur around midnight.

As he reached the opposite side of Savar Highway Police Station on the Dhaka-Aricha highway, a CNG stopped the pickup.

He claimed 5 armed people tied him up at gunpoint and took control of the pickup.

After roaming on the Dhaka-Aricha highway for some time, they tied him with a tree beside the highway at Bishmail area and left with the pickup.

The robbers also took away his mobile phone and cash, claimed Shahidul adding an auto-rickshaw driver recovered him in the morning.

Contacted, SM Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, told The Daily Star, "We have sent an officer to collect CCTV footage from the spot. The complaint will be taken into consideration after reviewing the footage.
