Ali Hossain Fakir appointed new Inspector General of Police

Reinstated by interim govt last year, he takes charge as the country’s top police official

The government has appointed Additional Inspector General of Police and chief of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Md Ali Hossain Fakir as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The appointment was announced today through a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Ali, a member of the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) cadre, will replace Baharul Alam, who was appointed IGP on contract on November 20, 2024.

On November 16, 2022, the Awami League government sent Ali into forced retirement, citing public interest, while he was serving as the commanding officer of Armed Police Battalion-3.

The interim government reinstated him in the force along with four others on August 27, 2024.

In August 2025, Ali was promoted from deputy inspector general (DIG) to the rank of supernumerary additional inspector general of police by the interim government.

Ali obtained B.Com (Honours) in Management, M.Com, and MBA degrees from Dhaka University.

He joined Bangladesh Police in 1995 as an assistant superintendent through the 15th BCS examination.

He also performed duties as deputy police commissioner in Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and superintendent of police in Netrokona, Feni, and Magura districts.

He served with distinction in the United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and the Ivory Coast. For training and official purposes, he visited various countries, including the United States and China.

At present, he is the acting president of the Police Service Association.
