Tagore’s ode to nature - comes alive in dance

A dance theatre production inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s poem Brikkho Bondona (An Ode to the Tree) was staged at the Chhayanaut Auditorium in Dhaka yesterday.

Titled “Dhora Toru Kabbo” (Nature’s Tale), the production was directed by dancer and choreographer Pooja Sengupta and performed by her dance group, Turangami.

The event was organised by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, High Commission of India, Dhaka.

The ceremony began with a welcome address by Mary Ann George, director of the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, who welcomed and thanked the distinguished guests present at the event. Among them were Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi.

The programme began at 4:30pm and concluded at 5:15pm with a performance based on Tagore’s Brikkho Bondona, presented by Pooja Sengupta and members of Turangami.

Drawing on Tagore’s celebration of nature, the dance drama explores the changing seasons through the personification of the Earth, ‘Dhora’, and the Tree, ‘Toru’. The production reflects on the magnificence of nature while highlighting the immense role and sacrifices of Mother Earth.

Led by Pooja Sengupta, Turangami brought the work to the stage through dance theatre, offering the audience an interpretation of Tagore’s poetry through the performance.

The event also highlighted the continuing cultural exchange between India and Bangladesh, with Tagore’s work serving as the artistic foundation for the presentation.
