Cancel Rooppur nuclear project

Nur Jahan, Chittagong
The news item titled, “Groundwork at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant begins Oct 2,” published in a Dhaka daily on September 2, 2013, struck me like a thunderbolt. From the very beginning when people learned about the government's plan, they protested vehemently and urged the government to refrain from this suicidal step for various reasons. It cannot be guaranteed that it is hundred percent safe; if something goes wrong, it would be disastrous. We know what a havoc it caused to Russia and Japan. Our country would be more prone to such accidents as our maintenance is very poor. Japan is a very advanced and rich country. Efficient and trained safety agency officials are in charge of the damaged power plant but still they are finding it hard to grapple with the disaster. Radioactive water is leaking into the Pacific Ocean from the reactor and some $ 470 million will be needed to set up a wall of frozen earth to stop the leakage of radioactive water into the ocean. We do not know how much money have already been spent by the Japanese government to tackle this disaster. Considering all the negative aspects, our government must immediately cancel the deal with Russia and thus save our country from disaster.
