Go 'deshi' the Deshal Way!
Ever since its inception in 2005, Deshal has been moving steadily up the Bangladeshi fashion scene, by providing well-designed clothes that are high on fashion and easy on the pocket. Initially targeted towards students and other demographics that are fashion conscious but have to operate within a budget, it has slowly carved a niche of its own.
Deshal focuses on using handloom fabrics such as taant, khaadi, and cotton for its collections, making fatuas, shalwar kameez sets, panjabis, children's wear and so on. Subtle embroidery, block and screen printing are used as embellishments on these pieces.
Walking into a Deshal store, you can notice how they have set themselves apart. Using old newspapers as wallpaper, their stores have a unique décor, which is complemented by the folk music playing in the background. There is a creative artwork in every piece of clothing, mentioning the name of the artist, be it a kameez, a fatua or a panjabi.
Most of the artwork is based on screen prints of animals, flowers, etc. and it is inspired by the sights and sounds of Bangladesh. As other stores make deshi products based on traditional themes, Deshal is unique in their adaptation of "deshi" due to their artwork on clothes.
While their fatuas and shalwar kameez sets usually have simple motifs such as fans, the saris available in Deshal are unique and beautiful. All saris are made of soft, lightweight cotton that usually has a 'paar' of a contrasting colour. The color palette is bold and vibrant; highly reminiscent of the beautiful colours that underline the rich landscape of Bengal.
While some have screen prints, others work with the concept of colour-blocking, where two or three different shades of the same colour are juxtaposed to stunning effects. In one of the saris, three different shades of green have been used to achieve a degrade effect, and another one has a mustard-coloured 'jamin' with screen print in 'self-colour' with thin borders in yellow and parrot green.
Some of the saris have borders that are woven thickly to give the piece texture. The regular kinds are available around the year, but Deshal also offers exclusive collections that are designed using theme colours for special occasions such as Pohela Boishakh, Pohela Falgun, Ekushey February and many more. They are also very reasonably priced.
So the next time you are tired of the typical, over-embellished saris jostling for space in most fashion houses, do pay a visit to one of Deshal's many outlets around the city for saris that are easy on the eyes and the pocket as well.
