Ali Hossain Fakir has taken charge as Inspector General of Bangladesh Police today.

He replaced Baharul Alam, who had been serving as IGP on contract since November 20, 2024.

The government yesterday appointed Ali, additional inspector general of police and Armed Police Battalion chief, as the new IGP.

A member of the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) cadre, Ali was sent into forced retirement “in the public interest” on November 16, 2022, while serving as the commanding officer of Armed Police Battalion-3 during the then Awami League government.

The interim government reinstated him on August 27, 2024, along with four other officers. In August 2025, he was promoted from deputy inspector general to supernumerary additional inspector general of police.

Ali joined Bangladesh Police in 1995 as an assistant superintendent of police.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman accompanied by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today pinned the rank badge of ‘IGP' on Ali Hossain Fakir at the Secretariat.
