Jamaat wins in Tajuddin’s birthplace, longtime AL stronghold Kapasia
In the 13th national parliamentary election, BNP won four out of five seats in Gazipur district, while Bangladesh Jamaat‑e‑Islami captured one seat in Kapasia.
Locals attributed Jamaat’s victory in Kapasia to candidate Salauddin Ayubi’s pledge of zero tolerance against extortion, corruption, and drugs, along with promises to stop illegal top soil removal.
BNP leaders, however, cited internal party conflicts as a factor in their defeat in the constituency.
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Mohammad Alam Hossain announced the official results today.
Historically, Kapasia has been an Awami League stronghold, with the first prime minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Tajuddin Ahmad’s son Sohel Taj elected twice and his daughter Simin Hossain Rimi elected four times.
In the absence of Awami League this election, the district’s political equation went through a major shift.
Salahuddin Ayubi, a former president of Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir, won the Gazipur‑4 (Kapasia) seat with 101,779 votes, defeating Shah Riazul Hannan, son of late minister ASM Hannan Shah, who received 90,390 votes.
Ayubi told The Daily Star that post‑election violence was ongoing in Kapasia, with attacks on houses and shops of Jamaat supporters.
“We want peaceful coexistence,” he stressed.
In addition, BNP candidate Mujibur Rahman won in Gazipur-1 (Kaliakoir and part of city corporation) seat by getting 2,08,688 votes.
His nearest rival Shah Alam Bakshi of Jamaat got 1,49,553 votes.
In Gazipur-2 (City Corporation area) seat, BNP nominee M Manjurul Karim Rony was elected by getting 1,88,606 votes.
His nearest rival, Ali Naser Khan of Jatiya Nagorik Party got 1,40,950 votes.
In Gazipur-3, BNP candidate SM Rafiqul Islam Bachchu won by getting 1,61,258 votes.

In Gazipur-5, BNP-nominated former MP AKM Fazlul Haque Milon won by getting 132,891 votes.
