NCP alleges attack on Nasiruddin Patwary’s vehicle in Sylhet

A vehicle carrying National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary came under attack while he was returning to Sylhet city from Jaintiapur upazila on Friday night, according to party leaders.

NCP leaders alleged that attackers hurled stones at the vehicle as Patwary's convoy was returning from a rally in Jaintiapur.

Patwary and NCP Convener Nahid Islam, who is also the opposition chief whip in parliament, posted videos on Facebook late Friday night. According to the posts, Patwary and another person were injured by shards of glass from the shattered window.

In a post published at around 10:50pm, Patwary wrote: “Tarique Rahman, you have made a grave mistake by leaving me bloodied. You have chosen the path of violence. This happened as we were returning after concluding the final programme of the Jaintiapur leg of the march…”

Nahid Islam, in a post around 20 minutes later, wrote, “BNP’s terrorist forces have again attacked the NCP’s convoy while returning from the July March in Sylhet’s Jaintiapur. The attackers smashed the vehicle’s windows. Nasiruddin Patwary and another person were injured...”

The videos, filmed from inside the moving vehicle, show its windows shattered and bloodied hands inside the car. The victims’ faces are not visible in the footage.

Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Molla, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jaintiapur Police Station, denied the attack on the NCP convoy.

“We escorted their vehicles under full police protocol up to the upazila’s border and handed them over to the protocol of the neighbouring police station,” he said.

“Had their convoy been attacked at that time, they would certainly have informed us, or stopped the vehicle to take someone to hospital. Nothing like that happened,” the OC added.
