1605 - Catholic 'conspirator' Guy Fawkes attempts to blow up King James I and the British Parliament. Plot discovered, Guy Fawkes caught, tortured and later executed along with seven others.

1941 - The Combined Japanese Fleet receive Top-Secret Order No. 1: In just over a month's time, Pearl Harbor is to be bombed, along with Malaysia, the Dutch East Indies and the Philippines.

1956 - Britain and France land airborne forces at Port Said in Egypt, escalating the Suez Crisis.
