High Court clears way for BCB election on June 7
The High Court on Sunday cleared the way for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to hold its board of directors election on June 7.
The bench of Justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy dismissed from its hearing list a writ petition that sought an injunction on the election.
Advocate Mosharaf Hossain, a lawyer from Chattogram, had recently submitted the petition as a supplementary application to a pending writ petition seeking a stay on the BCB election.
The court also observed that it would not intervene in the election process as a rule issued earlier -- questioning a provision of the National Sports Council Act regarding the formation of the board of directors -- remains pending before the court.
Following the High Court order, there is now no legal bar to holding the BCB election on June 7 to elect a new executive committee, BCB lawyer Barrister Mahin M Rahman said.
Petitioner’s lawyer Mohammad Mohsen Rashid told this correspondent that he would move the original writ petition for hearing and disposal of the rule after the court reopens following its annual vacation.
Both the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court will go on annual vacation on May 22 and reopen on June 7.
Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared for the state during today’s hearing, while Senior Advocate Mohammad Moshen Rashid represented the writ petitioner and Barrister Mahin M Rahman appeared for the BCB.
