Shome runs the show as Cosmos cruise past Fort Wayne

Shamit Shome delivered a superb box-to-box display as New York Cosmos secured a 4-2 away victory over Fort Wayne FC, with the Bangladesh midfielder providing two assists and running the show in the middle of the park.

Shome played the full 90 minutes and was at the heart of the Cosmos’ performance, dictating the tempo, driving attacks forward and doing plenty of the dirty work when Fort Wayne threatened to fight back.

After dominating possession early on without finding a way through, New York finally broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Shome picked out Lamin Jawneh, who finished to put the visitors ahead.

Ajmeer Spengler then set up Sergio Chavez in first-half stoppage time before creating another for Sebastián Guenzatti two minutes after the restart, putting the Cosmos 3-0 up.

Fort Wayne pulled one back through Ryan Becher in the 66th minute and briefly threatened to make a contest of it. Shome had other ideas.

Just five minutes later, he linked up with Jawneh once again, delivering the final pass for the forward to score his second of the night and restore New York’s three-goal advantage.

It was the decisive moment and the perfect illustration of Shome’s influence.

The 29-year-old completed 31 of 38 passes, including seven into the final third, while finding his range with four of five long balls. He also created two chances, one of them a big chance, despite having only 47 touches.

And Shome was just as important without the ball, winning three tackles and making two recoveries as the Cosmos controlled the midfield battle.

His two assists earned him an 8.6 match rating on Fotmob and capped a complete performance at both ends of the pitch.
