Mbappe certain 'Messi will score' in the final

France captain Kylian Mbappe believes Lionel Messi will waste little time in reclaiming the World Cup's all-time scoring record when Argentina face Spain in the final.

Mbappe moved to the top of the charts after scoring twice in France's 6-4 defeat against England in the third-place tie, taking his tally to 22 goals across three World Cups.

Messi, who has 21 World Cup goals, now has one final opportunity to overtake the Frenchman.

Asked whether he expected his record to last beyond the final, Mbappe smiled.

"Leo, he scores all the time," he said. "Tomorrow he will score, for sure."

Despite reaching another personal milestone, Mbappe admitted it brought him little satisfaction after France missed out on the final.

The 27-year-old said he would happily trade the record for the chance to compete for the World Cup title instead of playing in the third-place match.

"I just try to help my team every time," he said. "It's certain that when you score so many goals in the World Cup, it elevates you to certain levels. But I would have preferred not to be the top scorer in history and play the match tomorrow [the final].

"I think it's good for everything related to legacy and, when we stop, saying that I was one of those players. But today, that's not the first thing on my mind."
