WhatsApp launches 'Strict Account Settings' for high-risk users

By Tech & Startup Desk

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new security feature called 'Strict Account Settings', designed to offer stronger protection against sophisticated cyberattacks for high-risk users.

The option, available in the app's privacy settings (Settings > Privacy > Advanced), is a one-click toggle that locks the account to its most restrictive configurations. When enabled, it blocks media and attachments from unknown senders, disables link previews, and silences calls from contacts not saved in the user's address book. WhatsApp stated these features target channels that advanced hackers have previously used for surveillance.

The company emphasised that while all chats are protected by default end-to-end encryption, this additional mode is intended for users like journalists or public figures who may face targeted threats. Activating it will limit some app functionality in exchange for heightened security.

The feature is rolling out globally over the coming weeks, states official information. In its announcement, WhatsApp also noted it has implemented the Rust programming language in its backend systems to further guard against spyware and other exploits.
