[/twitter]The son beat the father in the battle for retaining Samajwadi Party's election symbol 'biçycle' in the run up to crucial elections to the legislature in India's biggest state of Uttar Pradesh.
India's Election Commission today ruled in favour of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav assigning the symbol to him, saying the group led by Akhilesh Yadav is Samajwadi Party and thus entitled to use the symbol.
The EC decision could be a big setback for 43-year-old Akhilesh's father Mulayam Singh Yadav, 77, who founded the party 25 years ago. Mulayam had earlier said he will accept whatever decision the Election Commission takes on the contentious poll symbol issue.
The turf war between the father and the son ahead of elections in Uttar Pradesh in February-March reached the Election Commission last week with Mulayam staking claim over the 'bicycle' symbol after he was deposed from the post of Samajwadi Party president by the group headed by Akhilesh on January 2.
The faction headed by Akhilesh too had approached the EC to claim their right to the symbol.
