1 MINUTE PLEASE!
"Ethics and aesthetics are intertwined; if you are not ethically right, it's impossible to come up with something aesthetically pleasing,” believes this week's interviewee Enamul Karim Nirjhar. His life is multifaceted. An architect by profession, he has not limited himself to only designing and planning spaces for others. He has embraced filmmaking as his passion, then comes photography, graphic illustration, writing poetry, lyrics and stories. His feature film Aha! and documentaries like Tarona, The Shadow Gap, Kheyal, Kohen has earned critical acclaim.
Childhood dream
Since my childhood, I always wanted to be a better individual who could help our country to be a better place.
Inspiration
My father
The identity you love the most
Whatever I do, I do them mostly for my joy and satisfaction. It is hard to prioritise one over the other. I would say architecture gives me my basic identity whereas filmmaking is my passion.
Favourite film maker
Ritwik Ghatak. I admire him as I find his works transparent, truthful and daring.
One thing you would like to change in Dhaka
I loathe the fact that our city life is losing a friendly neighbourhood. At present we live in a community where our neighbours hardly get to know each other. If I could, I would create more meaningful spaces within our community where more celebrations and friendly greetings would take place.
Favourtie city
There is no such thing; the whole country is very dear to me.
The ingredients you need to be an architect
I feel it's important to pour your heart into each of your work with honesty and devotion. The architects who believe in finishing their work in a rush, and then run for the next assignment, can never come up with their best output.
