Mystery shrouds death of housewife

Quoting local people Gournadi police said Putul Nandi, 25, wife of Ratan Nandi, allegedly committed suicide after being gangraped by neighbours Dhanjay Roy and Nepal while she was working in a betel leaf filed on Thursday. Her husband was in Dhaka.

She was first admitted to Gourandi Health Complex after she allegedly took pesticide. As her condition deteriorated, she was being taken to Barisal Medical College Hospital. She died Thursday night on way.

The body was taken home before her husband Ratan Nandi returned.

Quoting local Union Parishad member Kohinur Begum, police said the body was cremated before her husband returned home.

Kohinur Begum also told police on Friday that Putul Nandi died of illness and her body was cremated.

When newsmen contacted Kohinoor Begum Saturday morning, she told them that she was present at the time of cremation. But she could neither show any sign of cremation nor give any satisfactory answer to the question why the body was cremated before arrival of the husband.

Nikhil Chandra, a doctor at Gouranad health complex said Putul died of poisoning.

Gouranadi thana officer-in-charge Ziaul Karim said the incident was mysterious.

Police detained Ratan Nandi, her sister Bulu Kanon and local youth Rokon Khan for interrogation.
