Clash with ferry, transport men

50 PSTU students, teacher hurt

At last 50 students including some girls and one teacher of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) were injured yesterday in a clash with transport and ferry workers at Dopdapia ferry terminal, four miles from Barisal city.

Two university buses and one pickup in which they were coming to Barisal were damaged.

Four of the injured students have been admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. They are Md Rafiqul, Bazlur Rashid, Kazi Zakir and Mehedi Hasan.

Assistant Professor AKM Mostafa Jamal, who is convanor of the PSTU Teachers Association, is among the injured, police and witnesses said.

About 450 students and some teachers were coming to Barisal in seven vehicles to form a human chain in front of the Town Hall for removal of PSTU Vice-chancellor Prof Abdul Hannan.

They reached Dapdapia ferry terminal at about 11 am. After an altercation with some students, ferry employees and other transport workers attacked the students and teachers with sticks and rods.

The human chain programme could not be observed yesterday.
