'Don't send children to Bidi factory'

Bangladesh Trade Union Kendro (BTUK), an organisation working to eliminate child labour from tobacco factory and establish workers' rights under a project titled 'Prevention of Child Labour from Worst Form of Job, organised the meeting at Bahadurpur village in Bheramara upazila.

The project is being funded by the United States Department of Labour (USDOL). International Labour Organisation (ILO) is implementing the project under IPEC (International Programme to Eliminate Child Labour).

The meeting was followed by a procession participated by children, housewives, tobacco labourers, poor farmers and schoolteachers.

Principal Emdadul Islam presided over the meeting while it was addressed, among others, by Golam Hossain, General Manager of Monmohon Bidi Factory, Prof Aslam Uddin, Prof Azizur Rahman Shelly, schoolteacher Selina Banu, labourer leader Torikul Islam Lal and Ahasanul Haq of BTUK.
