Life term for acid thrower in Sylhet

The convict, Tota Miah, 30, was also fined Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer two years more imprisonment.

On refusal to a marriage proposal, Tota threw acid on his cousin Khaleda Begum, daughter of Abdul Mannan of Lama Hadarpara village in Gowainghat upazila while she was asleep. Tota's other cousin Fakir collaborated him in the criminal act done on March 7 last year.

Khaleda's elder sister Tahera Begum who was sleeping with her also sustained serious burn injuries. Immediately both the sisters were rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The next day, Khaleda was shifted to Dhaka for better treatment. But she died there after fighting for life for life for three days.

Considering his age, the tribunal decreased the culprit's punishment.

The judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal of Sylhet division, Shah-e-Alam Chowdhury pronounced the verdict.
