Diarrhoea claims 16 in Netrakona in a week, spreads in Satkhira

Our Netrakona correspondent reports: At least 16 people died and about 6,000 others were attacked with diarrhoea in 10 upazilas in the district last week.

The victims are Sathi,2, daughter of Sahab Ali of Baruna village, Salma,9, daughter of Abdur Razzak of Shibproshadpur village in the Sadar upazila, Lahaj Mia,41, of Nayakpur village, Papya,9, of Kaitail village, Hajia Begum,7, of Khaguria village, China Begum,6, of Madan upazila, Sumon,6, of Goatola village, Mohammad Tarabuddin,45, Mohammad Bahauddin,15, of Chorpara village, Mohammad Nakbor Ali,55, of Rambari village, Mohammad Subahan Mia,55, of Krisnar Chor village, Fazilatunnasa,95, of Laxmipur village, Mohammad Chomiruddin,25, Kabil Mia,42, son of Moulana Ismail of Bismanathpur village, Halima,3, of Charikhal village in Durgapur upazila, Achhiruddin,65, in Purbadhala upazila.

At least, 1,029 persons were attacked with diarrhoea in the Sadar upazila, 375 in Purbadhala upazila, 569 in Durgapur upazila, 563 in Kalmakanda upazila, 667 in Barhatta upazila, 161 in Mohonganj upazila, 844 in Khaliajuri upazila, 298 in Madan upazila, 812 in Atpara upazila and 656 in Kendua upazila in last one week, according to an official source.

However, unofficial sources said 21 people died and over 7,000 others were attacked with the disease.

When contacted, Netrakona Civil Surgeon said the situation is under control adding, 'we have adequate stock of oral saline and other medicine.'

His office sources said, 139 medical teams are working in the affected areas. Besides, special medical teams have been deployed at each upazila headquarter. Sources at the district control room said, people die due to ignorance and lack of awareness. 'Diarrhoea patients are being brought to hospital from the remote areas in a critical condition but they should be shifted to hospitals at the initial stage, said a doctor at Durgapur Upazila Health Complex.

Our Satkhira correspondent reports: Over 100 people were been attacked with the disease in Kalaroa upazila in the last one week.

They are taking treatment at Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex and private clinics.

Earlier, in the month of October more than 657 people were attacked with the waterborne disease in different villages of the upazila.

While visiting Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex and other clinics on Thursday, this correspondent saw many patients were flooring due to acute accommodation problem.

When contacted, a doctor at Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex said, people are being attacked with the disease due to consumption of adulterated and rotten foodstuff during the month of Ramadan and sheer ignorance.
