Access to national ID database
A demand by banks and telecom operators for an integrated platform, to access the national ID database for e-payment purposes has been raised. It has been suggested that a special portal may be created towards checking the authenticity of information while making electronic transfers.
The practice of electronic fund transfer through mobile phones and other devices are on the rise domestically as well as globally. An easy and risk free payment processing system for online vendors is yet to be established in Bangladesh. Also there are issues with fees and building awareness of the financial services on offer.
As per law, the Election Commission, the regulator of the NID database, can only share its information with government agencies. Since the NID database may include a wide variety of information so it cannot be free for all in terms of accessing. Perhaps a more expedient solution for making e-payment easier and failsafe is to prepare a database following the specific needs of its clientele – banks and telecom operators. A limited but identical ID database with facilities for verifying an individual's authentic data would not only serve its purpose but also be shared among other potential stake holders within the private sector.
