Bangladesh should focus more on IP rights now: experts at AmCham event

Intellectual property (IP) has become a significant factor in productivity and economic growth for Bangladesh now, as the country is developing fast, experts said today.

Strong and effective IP protection is a powerful incentive for firms to invest in new technology in sectors where the returns to technological investment involve high risks and are easy to copy, they said.

Their remark came at a virtual discussion on "Intellectual Property Rights - Protection and Practices in Bangladesh" organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham).

JoAnne Wagner, chargé d' affaires at the United States Embassy in Bangladesh, attended the discussion as the chief guest.

Md Abdus Sattar, registrar of the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks; John Cabeca, IP counselor for South Asia at United States Patent and Trademark Office, and Syed Ershad Ahmed, president of AmCham, also spoke.
