Distinguished academic and war veteran Professor Iqbal Ahmad passes away

Professor Iqbal Ahmad, a distinguished educator and freedom fighter, passed away on Saturday (December 6). He was 77.

He was born on September 20, 1948, in Narsingdi District. He was the eldest son of Alauddin Ahmad, former Member of the National Assembly from the Monohardi–Kapasia constituency in East Pakistan, and Jahanara Ahmad.

Professor Ahmad completed his BSc (Hons) and MSc from Dhaka University. He later earned an MSc in Industrial Administration from Aston University in the United Kingdom and an MS in Industrial Relations from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands.

He served for more than three decades at the Institute of Business Administration of Dhaka University as Professor and Director. He taught in the DBA, MBA, EMBA and BBA programmes and supervised MPhil and DBA students. He also held several government roles, including Director of the Board of Bangladesh Biman, Neutral Member of the Minimum Wages Board and Director of Sadharan Bima Corporation.

He served on several private sector boards and, until his passing, was an Independent Director of Uttara Bank PLC. He was an active Rotarian and social worker and authored works on human resource management and industrial relations.

He is survived by his wife, a son and two grandchildren.

His first janaza will be held on Saturday (December 6), after Zuhr prayers at Dhaka University Central Mosque. The second janaza will take place after Asr prayers at Siddheswari Girls' School Field on Bailey Road. He will be laid to rest in Banani Graveyard.
