East West University marks Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2025
East West University (EWU) is celebrating Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week 2025 with a series of dynamic events, underscoring the importance of critical thinking and digital awareness in the age of artificial intelligence.
Organised by the Department of Information Studies in collaboration with the UNESCO Dhaka Office and the Media and Information Literacy Network Bangladesh (MILNetBD), the celebration runs from October 24 to 31 at the EWU campus in Aftabnagar, Dhaka, under the global theme "Minds Over AI – MIL in Digital Spaces." The week-long programme includes rallies, debates, quizzes, awareness campaigns, and expert panel discussions.
A key highlight was the panel discussion on "Integration of Media and Information Literacy in Higher Education", held on October 28 at the S.M. Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery. Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the EWU Board of Trustees, attended as Chief Guest. The distinguished panel included Dr. Susan Vize, UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh; Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of EWU; and Dr. Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq, Professor at the University of Dhaka. The session was moderated by Professor Dr. Dilara Begum, Chairperson of the Department of Information Studies, EWU.
Speakers highlighted that Media and Information Literacy is essential for nurturing informed, ethical, and critically aware digital citizens. They praised EWU's pioneering role in advancing MIL education and aligning it with broader goals of sustainability, innovation, and responsible technology use. The discussion also stressed the need for national and global collaborations to build stronger MIL networks and empower individuals to identify misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation in digital spaces.
Faculty members, students, alumni, and professionals from various institutions attended the event, making it a vibrant celebration of knowledge, awareness, and shared commitment to digital literacy.
