Sonargaon University holds second convocation

Sonargaon University held its second convocation on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at the International Convention City Bashundhara in Dhaka.

The ceremony was presided over by Sharmeen S. Murshid, adviser to the interim government for the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and the Ministry of Social Welfare, who attended as chief guest. The convocation address was delivered by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Professor Dr Mesbahuddin Ahmed, chairman of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, was present as special guest.

Engineer Abdul Aziz, founder and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sonargaon University, Engineer Md Abdul Alim, founder and general secretary, Advocate Umme Salma, executive member of the Board of Trustees, Azizul Bari (Shipu), adviser to the Board of Trustees, and L Mir Abdul Alim also attended the programme.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Shamim Ara Hasan, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Bulbul Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Ekramul Islam, along with deans, department heads, faculty members, students, and guardians, were present at the event.

Students who completed undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from Spring 2021 to Summer 2025 took part in the convocation. A total of 96 students received gold medals, including 13 Chancellor's Gold Medals and 83 Vice-Chancellor's Gold Medals.

As part of the convocation programme, the university arranged an environment-focused initiative. A raffle draw was held among students who participated in a tree plantation campaign by planting two trees each and sharing videos of the activity on social media. Through a lottery, prizes included a cash award of Tk 50,000 for first place, a laptop for second place, and a smartphone for third place. Seven additional participants also received prizes.

The event concluded with a cultural programme. Performances by band Warfaze, Mahatim Sakib, and Shahriar Chowdhury were presented, alongside dance and music performances organised by Sonargaon University's Cultural Club.
