State University of Bangladesh holds 7th convocation
The 7th convocation of the State University of Bangladesh was held on Sunday, December 21, at the university's permanent campus in Purbachal New Town, Dhaka.
Presiding over the ceremony, Asif Nazrul, Adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, said academic degrees alone are not enough to remain competitive globally. He said competence, discipline and credibility are equally important.
He said Bangladesh has made progress at the individual level over the past 54 years of independence but has fallen behind in building strong and sustainable institutions. He referred to the police, judiciary and civil administration, saying their foundations have weakened in recent years, making effective governance difficult.
Referring to post–Second World War Europe, he said countries that invested in institution-building progressed, while prioritising individuals over institutions led to achievements that did not last.
At the beginning of his speech, Asif Nazrul paid tribute to the late Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, in whose memory the convocation was dedicated. He represented the Chancellor and President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin, at the ceremony.
The convocation speaker was SMA Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. He said learning is no longer limited to textbooks and urged graduates to turn new challenges into opportunities. He called on them to contribute to nation-building guided by humanity and ethical values.
The welcome address was delivered by Akhter Hossain Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the State University of Bangladesh. Other speakers included A. M. Shamim, President of the Board of Trustees; Md. Mahbubur Rahman, Vice-President; Nawzia Yasmin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; and deans of different faculties.
A total of 672 students from 10 departments received undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Three students received the Chancellor's Gold Medal, four received the Vice-Chancellor's Silver Medal and 20 received the Dean's Award.
The ceremony concluded in the evening with a cultural programme. Students, faculty members, alumni, officials and invited guests attended the event.
