Walton installs Bangladesh’s largest floating solar power plant
In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Bangladesh's superbrand and technology giant Walton has installed the country's largest floating solar power plant, with a capacity of one megawatt, at its headquarters in Chandra, Gazipur.
This initiative marks a significant step toward sustainable and eco-friendly industrial sector in Bangladesh.
Mostafizur Rahman Razu, Head of Walton's Environment, Health, and Safety Department, said that the floating solar power plant exemplifies Walton's commitment to sustainable progress. "This project not only generates renewable energy but also contributes to fish farming, land conservation, reduced water evaporation, and environmental protection," he said.
The electricity produced by the solar plant primarily powers Walton's manufacturing facilities. Any excess energy is supplied to the national grid through the net metering system. Designed for longevity and efficiency, the solar plant is expected to generate clean power for the next 20 years without harming the surrounding ecosystem or aquatic environment.
Since its inception, Walton has integrated green practices across its operations, striving for zero harm to people, the environment, and property while targeting net-zero carbon emissions. The company's environmental initiatives include the adoption of eco-friendly gases, waste minimization and recycling, composting, energy-efficient technologies, greenhouse gas reduction, renewable energy installation, and water recycling.
Through these efforts, Walton has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 911,823 metric tons and cut its overall carbon footprint by 10 percent, setting a strong example of sustainable industry and corporate social responsibility in Bangladesh.
