Two students from the mathematics department at Jagannath University (JnU) were injured after chunks of ceiling plaster fell on them during a class today.

The incident occurred in a seminar room while a class of the 20th batch was underway. The injured students were immediately taken to the university’s medical centre, where they received primary treatment.

Students alleged that several old buildings on the campus have long remained in a risky condition. Although the university authorities had previously suspended academic activities multiple times for renovation work, no sustainable repairs have been carried out, they claimed.

Expressing concern, a student of the department, Sadia Sultana Rimi, said the plaster fell suddenly on the students.

“Fahim suffered serious injuries to his head and around the eyes, while Mahfuz was badly injured in his back and hand,” she said.

She added that repeated delays in renovation have failed to ensure student safety.

“Anyone could have been in their place. Attending classes in such risky buildings has become life-threatening for us,” she said.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Rais Uddin visited the spot soon after the incident and instructed the authorities concerned to take necessary measures, according to sources.

In protest, students staged a demonstration in front of the building, blaming the lack of proper renovation for the accident and demanding immediate repair work.
