JU hosts academic exhibition challenging Johari Window theory
An academic exhibition challenging the conventional “Johari Window” theory was held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) under the supervision of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies.
Titled “The End of Johari Window: Six Doors, Six Challenges,” the exhibition took place at the university’s New Arts Building premises at around 9:30 AM today.
The event was jointly organised by Associate Professor Salma Ahmed and students of the department’s 53rd batch as part of the JMS 202: Interpersonal and Group Communication course.
According to Salma Ahmed, the exhibition aimed to critically revisit and reinterpret the traditional Johari Window model by introducing six newly conceptualised “interpersonal doors”.
“This initiative is not merely a presentation of a theoretical model; rather, it is a creative exercise in understanding the complex layers of self-awareness, interpersonal communication, and social perception from alternative perspectives,” she said.
She added that through this process, students developed deeper analytical abilities and practised critical thinking while exploring individuals and society in a more nuanced way.
Among those present at the exhibition were Prof Dr. Md Mozammel Hoque, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Assistant Prof Mridha Md Shiblee Noman, chairman of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies; and teachers and students from various departments.
Speaking at the event, Prof Mozammel said the Johari Window model is an important psychological theory that was not only taught in the classroom but also translated into practical learning through collaborative work between teachers and students.
“As a result, students were able to internalise the concept more deeply, making it a lasting part of their intellectual development,” he said.
