Dawn Depicts Devastation

As dawn broke on Ekushey February, the nation saw the devastation left by the fire the night before at Chawkbazar of Old Dhaka. Scores were dead and families were ripped apart. People and firefighters looked for remains of the people. Most were burnt beyond recognition. Relatives and well wishers try to console the inconsolable. By afternoon, people were carrying coffins of their loved ones to their funerals. The people of Old Dhaka had seen this before; nine years ago in Nimtoli.

Holding the one-year-old twins, wife of Kawser Ahmed faints and his mother cries inconsolably at the Dhaka Medical College morgue. Kawser, a final-year BBA student at Dhaka University, used to run a dental clinic with his friends in Chawkbazar. He and five others were killed in the fire.
