The Bounty of the Bee

Beehives hanging from branches high up in trees used to be common in the capital even a few years ago. Now, however, it isn't as frequently seen as before. Honey-collectors in Dhaka are also rarely seen. But it remains a seasonal profession. Just before the country gets ready to welcome the winter in all her misty glory, honey-collectors begin to harvest honey from the beehives scattered around the city. The product of the busy bees is nutritious and loved by most people. For around Tk 600 a kilogramme, one can avail the perfect, healthy substitute for sugar. Honey is also known for its medicinal properties, adding another gloss to its many layers. In recent years, there has been a real fear that bee populations may dwindle to the point where they will become extinct. Practices are being encouraged to prevent that from happening.
