The Promise of Pithas

Winter means the promise of steaming pithas. And this is a promise that has never been broken. While previously one would have to wait for one of the elders to be in the mood to prepare the delicacy, now they are available in almost every street corner. A winter morning that starts off with pitha is a great one, but so are evenings and nights punctuated by these winter delicacies. Pithas, or rice cakes, come in different varieties such as patishapta, phuli, bhapa, chitoi and much more. Sweet or savoury, these treats are inexpensive, starting from Tk 5 only. While Chitoi pitha is mixed with different kinds of dips, the fan favourite bhapa pitha, is consumed alone. With a plethora of pitha options to choose from, winter is fast becoming one of the tastiest seasons of the year.
