Winter Hits People Hard

As temperatures fall around the country, people begin to seek warmth in company, in blankets and near fires. The scenario is no different in the capital, where the economically-disadvantaged have the most to worry about. Winter is when the inadequacy of the country’s social safety-nets come to the fore. Thousands line the streets draping themselves with whatever they can find to escape the chill. The biting cold, however, makes no wealth discrimination. Sweaters and wind-breakers are brought out from the closets and dusted to be ready to wear, signalling the end of their hibernation. Good Samaritans engage in winter-clothes donation drives. A fire started by one, soon attracts others, all who huddled together amidst the fragrance of pithas being prepared everywhere. This is winter in Dhaka.  The photos were taken at different places of the capital.
