A Woman's World

Daudkandi Ghat in Cumilla remains abuzz with women workers all year round. From all corners of the country, women from lower socio-economic backgrounds find work here with no gender discrimination or wage disparity. The number of women workers is higher than that of the men there. Sometimes they even bring their children to the workplace as they carry sand in baskets from sand-carrying vessels. All labourers working there earn Tk 2-3 per basket of sand and around Tk 500 per day. While women's participation in the country's labour force may go unacknowledged and underappreciated most of the time, the women labourers of the ghat cannot go unnoticed.
