A man died after falling from the rooftop of a three-storied building during an anti-gambling drive by the police in Dhaka's Merul Badda area last night.

The deceased -- Mohammad Younus, 48, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver -- was a resident of the building, police said.

A police team carried out a raid at the building last evening on information that some of its residents were engaged in gambling, claimed Golam Mostafa,sub-inspector of Badda Police Station.

Sensing the presence of police, those who were gambling on the rooftop fled away by climbing down a rope but Younus fell to the ground and sustained critical injuries, the SI said.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 8:15pm, he said.

The body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
